Recent studies demonstrate the toxic effect of Ammonia, Hydrogen
sulfide and
methane released by natural decomposition of organic matter
from wastewater and
mismanagement of manure in farms.
Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide both have direct effects on the
respiratory system.
Hydrogen sulfide is considered a broad spectrum poison which
means it can poison several systems
in the body. Thus, in addition to possibly additive or synergistic
effects on the
respiratory system in the presence of ammonia, there may also
be additive effects with other
components resulting from organic decomposition. |
